Who Should You Vote for in 2020?
Tensions are running high in America’s political climate especially amidst claims of targeted voter suppression. There is more strain than ever between the parties and within the parties. Donald Trump has heavily divided his supporters into those who love him and those who hate him, and Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders seem too opposite to even be part of the same party. So who will be the best choice for you in November?
If You’re a Republican
Starting easy, the Republican nomination will go to Donald Trump. While candidates are attempting to contest President Trump, he currently has every delegate except for one Iowa delegate, who went to former Massachusetts governor, Bill Weld. The last time a sitting president was denied his party’s nomination was in the election of 1884 when Chester A. Arthur was denied the nomination in favor of former Speaker of the House, James G. Blaine. Arthur had only become president after the assassination of President James Garfield, so he likely never had his party’s full support in the first place.
If You’re a Democrat
At the time of writing, there are three major candidates left in the democratic primary, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Tulsi Gabbard. Gabbard, while still in the race, has only two delegates and can be almost entirely discounted from the race. Biden is currently the frontrunner with 1,147 delegates with Sanders falling behind with only 861. Sanders has shown himself to be the more progressive candidate, while Biden is more moderate. Either one of them earning the nomination could cause a massive split in the party. When Bernie Sanders lost the 2016 nomination to Hillary Clinton, thousands of voters still voted for Bernie Sanders as a write-in candidate, and a similar thing could happen again.
If You’re Neither
If you’re anything other than a Republican or Democrat in the United States, you have very little chance of ever having your opinions represented in the White House. However, don’t let that discourage you from voting; you can use a political polling website to make your voice heard in other ways. The Libertarian Party, whose current frontrunner is Jacob Hornberger, or the Green party, whose nominee is Dr. Jill Stein, are two of the largest parties outside of the Republican and Democrats, and voting for them can sometimes sway an election.
No matter your political affiliation, it is important to be educated on politics in your country. Even if you believe your preferred candidate has no chance of winning, it is better to make your voice heard in some small way than to compromise your morals and vote for someone you think is not best for the country.
